Praana Clinics

PCAAC

Welcome to the homepage of PCAACs (Praana Charitable Allergy Asthma Clinic).

Introduction:   PRAANA is a Sanskrit word and it means 'BREATHE FOR LIFE'.  Hence this is a 'BREATHING CLINIC' and it is a charitable/subsidized undertaking of International Asthma Services (IAS)  (www.globalchestinitiatives.org), a 501 c-3 registered charity in the state of Colorado, U S A.  The founder and architect of Praana Charitable Allergy Asthma Clincs (PCAACs) is Dr Pudupakkam K Vedanthan (PK), a Board certified Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAI) specialist settled in Fort Collins, Colorado USA.

History: Dr PK has been formulating the  concept of a PCAAC for several decades. The main hurdle was the lack of basic infrastructure and qualified specialists in the field of allergy and asthma.  This issue has been addressed successfully in the past 15 years with the advent of training programs and post graduate diploma courses at Christian Medical College, Vellore and more recently at Sir Gangaram Hospital and Research Center, Delhi.

Inspite of these advancements, Dr PK was noting the paucity of adequate care among the socioeconomically disadvantaged populations in several parts of India and beyond. Hence the model of PCAAC came into practice for the FIRST time in 2017 under the leadership of Dr Savitha Ramaraj, Professor of Pediatrics  at Mysore Medical College and Research Center (MMCRI), Mysore the almamater of Dr PK and his other family members including his father.

Due to the success and popularity of the PCAAC at MMCRI, the second clinic was inaugurated at Jodhpur, Rajasthan under the leadership of Dr Dan Purushotam.  Recently with the advent of the Covid Pandemic there has been huge disruptions in people's livelihood, the health infrastructure as well as the overall economy of the countries across the globe, India being no exception.

Due to this change of the healthcare scenario especially in his homeland of India, Dr PK decided to expand the Praana concept.  He approached around fifty alumni of different AAI training programs in India.  The response was overwhelming and very soon around 30 physicians across various parts of India as well as Nepal and far reaching places like Barbados in the Caribbeans took up the cause of establishing a Praana Clinic at their local medical practices.

Hence the PCAAC movement, born in 2017, has matured over the past four years and now has mushroomed across India and beyond.

Our Commitment

Bronchial asthma is a worldwide problem affecting hundreds of millions of individuals, both adults and children.  The World Health Organization reports that in 2019 alone, an estimated 262 million people were affected by asthma which also caused 455,000 deaths, and these numbers continue to grow.  Additionally, asthma is the most common cause of chronic disease among children, and is often under-diagnosed and under-treated in low- and middle-income countries.  These conditions result in a very high degree of morbidity, loss of man-hours and school hours, and loss of millions of dollars every year.  The morbidity due to asthma has been steadily increasing worldwide over the past decades, and there are several reasons of this rise in mortality.

Our commitment is to counter this dangerous trend by improving access to proper care for more people worldwide.  We work towards achieving our commitment by: 1. Improving access to top-notch medical education for physicians, who in turn provide enhanced care and professional treatment to their patients; 2. Providing free and high-quality medical testing and care through our patented PRAANA charitable clinics; and 3. Supporting research and development to raise public awareness, as well as to improve professional training and technological applications.
Saahns means Breath in Urdu and Hindi, and we focus on improving breathing.
